February is arguably Zanzibar’s best-kept secret. It sits within the short dry season with reliably excellent weather — clear skies, warm temperatures, and perfect ocean conditions. Weather: Excellent. Warm and dry with very low rainfall.

Best for: Early March beach holidays. Avoid late March.

April is the height of the long rains and is generally not recommended for a beach holiday. Heavy, prolonged rainfall is common throughout the month. The landscape is lush and green, and prices are at their lowest point of the year, but beaches, outdoor activities, and ocean conditions are all compromised. Some budget travelers visit for the dramatic scenery and rock-bottom prices.
Weather: Heavy rains, high humidity. Not suitable for the beach.

June marks the beginning of Zanzibar’s best season. The rains end, humidity drops, and a comfortable southeast trade wind (the Kusi) brings fresh, cooler air across the island. Almost identical to July in terms of conditions. August is the second peak month — excellent weather, outstanding diving and snorkeling, full calendar of water sports. Visitor numbers are at their absolute highest. Schools on holiday in Europe and North America mean many family groups visit in August. Book significantly in advance.

September offers almost all the benefits of July and August with slightly lower visitor numbers as the European summer ends. Ocean conditions remain exceptional.
